Nutrition as a Factor of Health Improvement and Prevention of Metabolic Disorders

Nutrition as a Factor of Health Improvement and Prevention of Metabolic Disorders

On October 10, 2025, the Department of Hygiene and Ecology held an educational event titled “Nutrition as a Factor of Health Improvement and Prevention of Metabolic Disorders” for 6th-year students of the Medical and Pharmaceutical Faculty, specialty “Medicine”, as part of a meeting of the student scientific group “Health Promotion and Disease Prevention.”

The event was opened by Professor Taras Kmet, Doctor of Medical Sciences, who emphasized the relevance of the topic, the importance of understanding hygienic principles of rational nutrition, and the need to follow them to prevent metabolic disorders. The professor also discussed the features of eco-protective nutrition and demonstrated how to use a dosimeter-radiometer to measure the level of radioactive contamination in food products, as well as the Greentest ECO-6 device for determining nitrate content.

The head of the student scientific group, Associate Professor Oksana Kushnir, reminded participants about the main principles of the “Healthy Eating Plate” (a balanced nutrition concept developed by the Harvard School of Public Health) and discussed certain aspects of preventing nutrition-related diseases, particularly in tropical climates.

She also conducted a practical workshop on determining body composition parameters using bioimpedance analysis with TANITA Body Composition Monitor (Model BC-730) and measuring height with a floor stadiometer (DSTU GOST 16371:2006). Under the supervision of instructors, all interested students had the opportunity to work with the devices and perform a hygienic assessment of the obtained results.

International Students of BSMU Traditionally Celebrate Navaratri

At the turn of September and October, students of the Indian Community at Bukovinian State Medical University (BSMU) traditionally celebrated one of the most important Vedic festivals — Navaratri. This festival, known as the Days of the Divine Mother, symbolizes the triumph of good over evil.

This year, senior students of the Medical and Pharmaceutical Faculty also joined the celebration. On behalf of the university administration, Associate Professor Mykola Haras, Deputy Dean, delivered a congratulatory speech. The event was also attended by faculty curators — Associate Professors Iryna Balaniuk, Olena Blinder, and Vira Shuper, as well as representatives of the Student Council.

The tradition of celebrating Navaratri at BSMU unites not only international students but also Ukrainian students who are interested in India’s rich cultural heritage. Such events promote intercultural friendship and help foreign students better adapt to life and study in Ukraine.

First-Year BSMU Students Visit the Simulation Center

First-Year BSMU Students Visit the Simulation Center

First-year students of the Medical Faculty, majoring in Medicine, together with their curators — Associate Professors Inna Buzdugan and Olha Bukach of the Department of Internal Medicine — took an educational tour to the Simulation Center of Bukovinian State Medical University (BSMU).

The future doctors had the opportunity to see how real clinical situations are recreated during the training process to help develop practical skills in examination, diagnosis, and patient care. The students noted that working in conditions as close as possible to real practice allows them to improve not only professional competencies but also concentration and stress resistance.

During the visit, the students explored various classrooms of the Center equipped with modern devices and mannequins.

They shared their impressions, saying that becoming acquainted with innovative approaches to learning inspires them for further practical training. The students expressed their gratitude to the organizers and admitted that they are already planning their next visit to the Simulation Center.

A Modern Laparoscopic System Installed at the Department of Surgery No. 2 of BSMU
A new laparoscopic system, purchased with the funds of Bukovinian State Medical University, has been installed at the Department of Surgery No. 2.
The equipment will be used for the training of medical interns, specialization in “Surgery,” as well as for organizing workshops and thematic improvement courses. This opens opportunities to involve leading specialists from clinics across Ukraine and to introduce modern treatment methods into the educational process.
The new system is already being actively used in surgical practice — successful abdominal surgeries are being performed with the participation of medical interns under the guidance of Professor Ihor Shkvarkovskyi, Head of the Department of Surgery No. 2.
The advanced laparoscopic equipment enables interns to acquire hands-on practical skills in conditions closely approximating real clinical settings, while patients receive high-quality medical care.
The staff of the department, medical interns, and students express their sincere gratitude to Bukovinian State Medical University for its significant contribution to the development of medical education and the surgical service in the region.
