Clinical and Research Work of Bukovinian State Medical University
Bukovinian State Medical University (BSMU) has played a major role in advancing healthcare and medical science in Ukraine. Today, it is recognized as a leading institution for training medical professionals and as one of the key centers of clinical and research work in the western region of the country.
Core Areas of Clinical and Research Activity
Clinical and advisory activities, combined with teaching, research, and educational work, are among the main responsibilities of the university’s clinical departments. These efforts support the goals of Ukraine’s national healthcare development strategy and contribute to improving medical practice across the region.
BSMU conducts clinical and advisory work across 29 clinical departments, all of which operate within medical and specialized healthcare institutions of the Chernivtsi City Council and the Department of Health of the Chernivtsi Regional State Administration.
The teaching and clinical staff includes 59 professors, 69 doctors of medical sciences, 171 associate professors, and 232 candidates of medical sciences. A total of 323 clinicians work at clinical departments, including 212 with the highest medical qualification category, 32 with the first, 36 with the second, and 43 with specialist certificates.
52 university staff members serve as regional experts and external consultants for the Department of Health of the Chernivtsi Regional Administration and the City Health Department. Fourteen staff members have been awarded the honorary title “Honored Doctor of Ukraine.”
Leading clinicians of the university are members of the regional certification commissions, take part in meetings of the Department of Health, and are actively involved in the reform and development of healthcare in the region. They also participate in emergency medical coordination and response activities.
Education, Training, and Professional Development
The clinical departments conduct extensive educational and professional development activities for healthcare workers, including:
- advanced training and certification courses,
- clinical internships,
- thematic seminars,
- scientific and practical conferences.
- Partnership with regional healthcare authorities ensures continuous improvement of medical qualifications and enhances the quality of healthcare services provided to the population.
Each year, the clinical departments provide approximately 100,000 consultations and perform over 6,000 surgeries and medical procedures.
The integration of clinical, scientific, and educational activities — particularly in cooperation with the Chernivtsi Emergency Hospital — has led to the creation of several University Clinical Centers, including:
– Regional Center for Endourology and Lithotripsy
– Regional Center for Endoscopic Surgery
– Center for Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery
– Regional Center for Purulent Wounds and Diabetic Complications
– Regional Center for Thermal and Neurotrophic Injuries and Dermoplasty

The Educational and Dental Clinical Center “University Clinic”, based on the Departments of Therapeutic and Orthopedic Dentistry, functions as an academic, research, and treatment unit. Its main tasks include: providing diagnostic and therapeutic care; ensuring the educational process through innovative teaching methods; training students, interns, and postgraduates; professional development of medical personnel; and conducting research in modern diagnostic, treatment, and rehabilitation methods.
Information about the clinic’s activities is available on its official website and on social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. All clinic staff are registered in the national eHealth system. The doctors are also actively involved in volunteer activities, community outreach, and charity events, including visits to orphanages and public health campaigns.
