FACULTY OF MEDICINE
The Medical Faculty is the successor of the Faculty of Medicine, which until 1975 had been the only faculty at Chernivtsi State Medical Institute. In 1997, it was renamed the First Medical Faculty, and since 2024 – the Medical Faculty.
The Medical Faculty has gone through all stages of the university’s development. In 1944, 348 students were admitted to the first year, and the first classes began on October 1. It is worth noting that the first graduation of doctors took place in 1946, with 88 graduates, eight of whom received diplomas with honors.
As of November 1, 2024, more than 1,400 students are studying at the faculty.
History of the Faculty
A significant contribution to the establishment and development of the faculty was made by its deans: Professor Ivan Hnatovych Fedorov (1944–1949), Head of the Department of Radiology; Professor Yakiv Pavlovych Skliarov (1949–1954), Head of the Department of Normal Physiology; Professor Stepan Petrovych Zakryvydoroha (1954–1956), Head of the Department of Pharmacology; Professor Oleksandra Semenivna Sokol (1956–1959), Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases; Professor Ivan Andriiovych Shevchuk (1959–1961), Head of the Department of Histology; Professor Olena Ilarionivna Samson (1961–1963), Head of the Department of Faculty Therapy; Professor Olena Antonivna Troyan (1963–1967), Head of the Department of Microbiology, Virology, and Immunology; Professor Hryhorii Tymofiiovych Pisko (1967–1970), Head of the Department of Pharmacology; Associate Professor Oles Oleksandrovych Voitsekhivskyi (1970–1972), Head of the Department of Psychiatry;

Professor Volodymyr Frantsovych Myslytskyi (1997–2001), Head of the Department of Pathological Physiology; Professor Taras Mykolaiovych Boichuk (2001–2003), Professor of the Department of Medical Biology; Professor Viktor Pavlovych Polovyi (2003–2010), Head of the Department of General Surgery; Professor Vasyl Deoniziiovych Moskaliuk (2010–2021), Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology.
Since 2021, the faculty has been headed by Associate Professor Oleksandr Hryhorovych Buriak, Associate Professor of the Department of Pediatrics, Neonatology, and Perinatal Medicine. His deputies are Associate Professor Mykola Heorhiiovych Hinguliak (Department of Pediatrics and Medical Genetics) and Associate Professor Denys Borysovych Stolyar (Department of Histology, Cytology, and Embryology). The faculty is also supported by experienced staff members of the dean’s office – Myroslava Viacheslavivna Kambur and Nataliia Anatoliivna Leizor.
Currently, the faculty provides training for students in the specialty “Medicine.” More than 1,400 students are enrolled across six years of study.
The best students of the faculty are awarded named scholarships of the President of Ukraine, Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, and the academic scholarship named after Mykhailo Hrushevsky.

Dental Faculty Students of BSMU Successfully Completed Summer Clinical Practice On July 25, 2025, students of the 3rd and 4th years of the Dental Faculty at Bukovinian State Medical University successfully defended their reports on summer clinical practice. The event marked the final stage of an important part of professional training aimed at developing the clinical skills of future dentists. During the internship, students trained at both public and private dental institutions, which allowed them to apply their theoretical knowledge in real clinical settings under the supervision of experienced professionals. The practical training covered several key areas, including: initial patient examination and assessment; development of treatment plans; assisting during clinical procedures; adherence to modern standards of sterilization, infection control, and clinical protocols. During the final defense, students presented their reports, shared clinical case studies, described the specifics of their work at various training bases, and demonstrated significant progress in their professional competencies.

The new system is already being actively used in surgical practice — successful abdominal surgeries are being performed with the participation of medical interns under the guidance of Professor Ihor Shkvarkovskyi, Head of the Department of Surgery No. 2. The advanced laparoscopic equipment enables interns to acquire hands-on practical skills in conditions closely approximating real clinical settings, while patients receive high-quality medical care. The staff of the department, medical interns, and students express their sincere gratitude to Bukovinian State Medical University for its significant contribution to the development of medical education and the surgical service in the region.
