BSMU THERAPEUTIC WORK
Therapeutic-consulting work with educational, scientific and pedagogical activity is a priority component of the overall therapeutic work of Bukovinian State Medical University.
Such amount of therapeutic work is carried out at the University at 30 clinical departments located in therapeutic, prophylactic and specialized medical institutions subordinated to the Administration of Health Care in Chernivtsi and Chernivtsi Regional Department of Health Care of Regional State Administration. The powerful potential of the teaching staff of the clinical departments includes: 46 Professors, 61 Doctor of medical sciences, 152 Associate Professors and 246 Candidates of medical sciences. The higher attestation medical category is awarded to 216 employees, the first one has 55, and the second one has 36. Over 50 employees of the clinical departments of BSMU have been appointed experts and consultants of the Chernivtsi Department of Health Care of Regional State Administration and the city health department. 17 University employees were awarded with the title “Honored Doctor of Ukraine”.
During the years of its existence our educational institution has made a significant contribution to the development of health care and medical science in Ukraine. Today it is a real center of medical personnel training and one of the centers of medical science in the western region of Ukraine. The therapeutic-consulting work of the staff of the clinical departments is closely linked with the therapeutic and prophylactic institutions of the region and city subordination, which are the bases of the clinical departments. These are 33 medical institutions of the regional and city subordination.
The staff of clinical departments annually give about 200,000 consultations, in particular: at basic institutions – up to 160,000 consultations, at polyclinics – up to 18,000, at out-patient institutions – up to 20,000, in the areas of the region – up to 5,000, and also more than 15,000 diagnostic researches and about 10,000 surgeries.
The combination of clinical, scientific and educational activities of the multidisciplinary institution of health care of the RMI “Emergency Hospital” provided the maximum use of the potential of the HSEE of Ukraine “Bukovinian State Medical University” and became the foundation for the establishment on the basis of EH of University centers: the regional center of endourology and lithotripsy; regional center of endoscopic surgery; regional center of plastic reconstructive and aesthetic surgery; regional center of purulent wounds and surgical complications of diabetes mellitus; regional center of thermal, neurotrophic lesions and dermoplastic; regional center of traumatology, endoprosthetics, pathology of joints and spine. The center of minimally invasive surgery and gynecology; endoscopic urology; city center of neurodegenerative eye diseases were created and operated in the Bukovinian State Medical University.
Specialized University medical centers provide highly qualified specialized medical care for patients with surgical pathology, scientific research, developing of effective methods of diagnosis and treatment. There is expert evaluation of scientific research results, testing and implementation of new methods of diagnosis, treatment of patients; testing of medical instruments, equipment, medicines, organization and conducting of scientific seminars, clinical, scientific-methodical conferences, expert commissions, consulates, medical councils, etc. The University has created an educational-medical dental center “University Clinic”. By the Order of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated December 14, 2016, the Center was included in the list of health care institutions of Ukraine with the right to provide paid services to the population.

Graduation Ceremony of International Students – Master’s Degree in Medicine At the Medical and Pharmaceutical Faculty of Bukovinian State Medical University, the final attestation of 6th-year students majoring in Medicine has been successfully completed. All international graduates successfully passed the Integrated Licensing Exam “Krok 2. Medicine”! Throughout their years of study, the students have come a long way — gaining valuable knowledge, acquiring essential practical skills, and successfully passing the state examinations and final assessments. Despite the challenging times in Ukraine, the entire BSMU team has ensured the most favorable conditions for quality education and the successful completion of studies. On June 21, 2025, a solemn graduation ceremony was held in the elegant hall of the “Akademichnyi” Palace of Bukovinian State Medical University to celebrate the graduates of the Medicine program (international students). The diplomas of Master of Medicine were presented by the Rector of the University, Professor Ihor Herush. We sincerely wish our graduates professional success, confidence in their knowledge and abilities, fulfillment of dreams, and realization of their most ambitious goals! We also warmly invite them to continue their medical journey at BSMU during their internship training.

Dental Faculty Students of BSMU Successfully Completed Summer Clinical Practice On July 25, 2025, students of the 3rd and 4th years of the Dental Faculty at Bukovinian State Medical University successfully defended their reports on summer clinical practice. The event marked the final stage of an important part of professional training aimed at developing the clinical skills of future dentists. During the internship, students trained at both public and private dental institutions, which allowed them to apply their theoretical knowledge in real clinical settings under the supervision of experienced professionals. The practical training covered several key areas, including: initial patient examination and assessment; development of treatment plans; assisting during clinical procedures; adherence to modern standards of sterilization, infection control, and clinical protocols. During the final defense, students presented their reports, shared clinical case studies, described the specifics of their work at various training bases, and demonstrated significant progress in their professional competencies.

A Modern Laparoscopic System Installed at the Department of Surgery No. 2 of BSMU A new laparoscopic system, purchased with the funds of Bukovinian State Medical University, has been installed at the Department of Surgery No. 2. The equipment will be used for the training of medical interns, specialization in “Surgery,” as well as for organizing workshops and thematic improvement courses. This opens opportunities to involve leading specialists from clinics across Ukraine and to introduce modern treatment methods into the educational process. The new system is already being actively used in surgical practice — successful abdominal surgeries are being performed with the participation of medical interns under the guidance of Professor Ihor Shkvarkovskyi, Head of the Department of Surgery No. 2. The advanced laparoscopic equipment enables interns to acquire hands-on practical skills in conditions closely approximating real clinical settings, while patients receive high-quality medical care. The staff of the department, medical interns, and students express their sincere gratitude to Bukovinian State Medical University for its significant contribution to the development of medical education and the surgical service in the region.
