Scientific work

Scientific work at Bukovinian State Medical University (BSMU) is one of the core pillars of its academic mission and international reputation. The University conducts around 40 scientific and research projects annually, including 4 state-funded studies. Each year, BSMU successfully completes 4–5 doctoral dissertations and 20–30 candidate dissertations, proving its strong scientific potential and leadership in medical research.

To support high-quality scientific work, the university operates a modern Scientific Research Laboratory and a Center of Clinical Research. Their purpose is to strengthen methodological support, enhance research efficiency, and promote innovation in fundamental and clinical medicine.

BSMU has developed several scientific schools focused on addressing key medical challenges. Their research areas include diagnostics, treatment, and prevention of cardiovascular diseases, malignant tumors, tuberculosis, endocrine and immune disorders, as well as diseases of the digestive and respiratory systems in both adults and children. The university is also actively involved in the development and testing of new medicines.

According to the international scientometric database SciVerse Scopus, BSMU ranks among the top ten medical universities in Ukraine, demonstrating strong publication activity and citation impact. Additionally, the university consistently receives recognition in rankings for high inventive activity and regularly obtains patents for innovative medical solutions.

A comprehensive system for preparing highly qualified scientific and pedagogical personnel has been established through doctoral and postgraduate studies. The University offers 9 doctoral specialties and annually trains more than 50 young scientists through full-time and part-time postgraduate programs in 21 specialties. Over 30 medical professionals continue their advanced training in clinical residency programs.

BSMU actively cooperates with other research institutions, participating in joint scientific projects and dissertation work. The university maintains partnerships with 43 Ukrainian and 20 international institutions, strengthening global collaboration in scientific research. Academic staff regularly participate in international exchange programs, enhancing their professional competence and broadening scientific cooperation.

Every year, BSMU hosts 7–10 scientific forums, included in the official registers of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. The University is a recognized organizer of national and international scientific-practical conferences, plenums, symposia, and congresses that gather leading experts from Ukraine and abroad. Research results are frequently presented using the WebClass telecommunication service of the URAN scientific network.

Ukrainian and international researchers publish their findings in BSMU’s specialized scientific journals, including Bukovinian Medical Announcer, Clinical Anatomy and Operative Surgery, Clinical and Experimental Pathology, Neonatology, Surgery and Perinatal Medicine, International Endocrinology Magazine, Current Issues in Social Sciences and History of Medicine, and BIMCO Journal Abstracts Book. The University also maintains an open-access repository containing over 13,000 full-text scientific works.

BSMU actively supports young scientists through the Council of Young Scientists and the Students’ Scientific Society, which includes more than 1300 students across 58 scientific circles. These structures help develop research skills, stimulate innovative thinking, and nurture future scientific leaders. In addition to active participation in various scientific events in Europe and in the world, students and young scientists take internships in leading clinics and universities of Germany, Austria, France, Israel, Italy, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, etc.

One of the university’s most prominent scientific events is the International Medical and Pharmaceutical Congress of Students and Young Scientists (BIMCO). This annual congress gathers over 1,500 participants from 75 medical institutions across 32 countries, offering more than 35 workshops, 25 clinical master classes, and numerous sessions in both Ukrainian and English. BIMCO strengthens international research cooperation and maintains partnerships with medical conferences at 20 global universities.

International collaboration remains a key direction in the development of scientific work at BSMU. Students and young scientists participate in global scientific events and undertake internships in leading clinics and universities in Germany, Austria, France, Israel, Italy, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, and many other countries.

Dental Faculty Students of BSMU Successfully Completed Summer Clinical Practice On July 25, 2025, students of the 3rd and 4th years of the Dental Faculty at Bukovinian State Medical University successfully defended their reports on summer clinical practice. The event marked the final stage of an important part of professional training aimed at developing the clinical skills of future dentists. During the internship, students trained at both public and private dental institutions, which allowed them to apply their theoretical knowledge in real clinical settings under the supervision of experienced professionals. The practical training covered several key areas, including: initial patient examination and assessment; development of treatment plans; assisting during clinical procedures; adherence to modern standards of sterilization, infection control, and clinical protocols. During the final defense, students presented their reports, shared clinical case studies, described the specifics of their work at various training bases, and demonstrated significant progress in their professional competencies.

A Modern Laparoscopic System Installed at the Department of Surgery No. 2 of BSMU A new laparoscopic system, purchased with the funds of Bukovinian State Medical University, has been installed at the Department of Surgery No. 2. The equipment will be used for the training of medical interns, specialization in “Surgery,” as well as for organizing workshops and thematic improvement courses. This opens opportunities to involve leading specialists from clinics across Ukraine and to introduce modern treatment methods into the educational process. The new system is already being actively used in surgical practice — successful abdominal surgeries are being performed with the participation of medical interns under the guidance of Professor Ihor Shkvarkovskyi, Head of the Department of Surgery No. 2. The advanced laparoscopic equipment enables interns to acquire hands-on practical skills in conditions closely approximating real clinical settings, while patients receive high-quality medical care. The staff of the department, medical interns, and students express their sincere gratitude to Bukovinian State Medical University for its significant contribution to the development of medical education and the surgical service in the region.

Graduation Ceremony of International Students – Master’s Degree in Medicine At the Medical and Pharmaceutical Faculty of Bukovinian State Medical University, the final attestation of 6th-year students majoring in Medicine has been successfully completed. All international graduates successfully passed the Integrated Licensing Exam “Krok 2. Medicine”! Throughout their years of study, the students have come a long way — gaining valuable knowledge, acquiring essential practical skills, and successfully passing the state examinations and final assessments. Despite the challenging times in Ukraine, the entire BSMU team has ensured the most favorable conditions for quality education and the successful completion of studies. On June 21, 2025, a solemn graduation ceremony was held in the elegant hall of the “Akademichnyi” Palace of Bukovinian State Medical University to celebrate the graduates of the Medicine program (international students). The diplomas of Master of Medicine were presented by the Rector of the University, Professor Ihor Herush. We sincerely wish our graduates professional success, confidence in their knowledge and abilities, fulfillment of dreams, and realization of their most ambitious goals! We also warmly invite them to continue their medical journey at BSMU during their internship training.
